Based on the famous fashion doll franchise from Mattel, Greta Gerwig’s run as a director continues with another great film that is hilarious, light-hearted, and fun for people of all ages. After making her directorial debut with the coming-of-age film “Lady Bird” and adapting the famed novel “Little Women,” Greta Gerwig continues to challenge herself as a filmmaker by creating a film that is funny, engaging, and touches on themes of self-empowerment and existentialism to great success. Margot Robbie delivers an excellent performance as Barbie. Robbie portrays Barbie as a character who breaks free from the stereotypes that Barbie is known for to make her a real person and comes off as a modern-day version of Truman Burbank from “The Truman Show.” Ryan Gosling delivers a fantastic scene-stealing performance as Ken. Being exposed to the world, Gosling portrays Ken as a character who transforms and discovers how his views should be seen instead of the world he currently lives in. Bringing humor, emotion, and depth to Ken, Ryan Gosling delivers one of his best performances. The supporting cast features some great performances, including Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Rhea Perlman, and Will Ferrell. Thanks to Gerta Gerwig’s excellent direction, fantastic production design, and incredible performances by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, “Barbie” is a fantastic film that comes off as “The Lego Movie” meets “The Truman Show” and with three great films in a row, Greta Gerwig continues to be one of the best directors working today.
