Thirty-six years after the release of “Beetlejuice,” Tim Burton returns to the film that gave him his career by directing a sequel that is campy and hilarious at the same time. After having mixed results with 2019’s “Dumbo,” Tim Burton makes a return to form by bringing us back to the afterlife thanks to the incredible production design, fabulous costumes and makeup, and fantastic special effects. Reprising his star-making role of the iconic ghost, Michael Keaton delivers a tremendous role as Betelgeuse. Completely stealing the show, Keaton is once again hilarious and scary as the iconic ghost, showing why he became a cultural icon in 1988. Reprising their roles from the original, Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara deliver great performances as Lydia and Delia Deetz. Jenna Ortega delivers an excellent performance as Lydia’s daughter, Astrid, which mirrors Winona Ryder’s star-making role in the original film. The one criticism this film has is that much like “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” which came out earlier this year, the film feels like a long-extended episode of the “Beetlejuice” animated series. Thanks to Tim Burton’s incredible direction, striking visuals, and fantastic performances by Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, and Jenna Ortega, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is a fun sequel and a great reminder that when Tim Burton is in his element, he can deliver excellent movies and this is one of them.
