The newest romantic drama from A24 is a fantastic look into two Korean people who were friends when they were young and reconnect after years apart from each other. First-time director Celine Song does an excellent job of capturing these two people’s lives and asking what their lives would be like if things worked out differently. Greta Lee and Teo Yoo deliver fantastic performances as the two main characters who were friends as kids and meet again in adult lives, leading two very different paths. John Magaro gives an excellent performance as the husband of Greta Lee’s character. Magaro serves as the third wheel to Lee and Yoo, showing where Lee ended up having been away from Yoo for so many years, and the film does a great job of not painting any character as good and evil. Instead, through the life choice and career paths they made, it turns them into ordinary people even if they are missing something from their lives. Thanks to Celine Song’s incredible direction, emotional themes, and fantastic performances by Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, “Past Lives” is one of the best films of the year and another win for A24 following the success they had with the last year’s award winners “Everything Everywhere All at One” and “The Whale.”
