The Alto Knights: A forgettable film that will have you sleeping with the fishes

Based on the real-life story of mafia leaders Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, the newest crime film by director Barry Levinson is a great story that is unfortunately three decades too late. Known for Oscar-winning movies such as “Rain Man” and “Bugsy,” Barry Levinson’s direction comes off as stale and flat, a far cry from the films he made during the 1980s and 1990s. His ideas for the film are there, but he doesn’t give the audience enough investment to understand the characters, and they want to control the mob. Robert De Niro plays both mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello. De Niro delivers an excellent performance as Frank Costello. However, his performance as Vito Genovese is hugely over the top, so I questioned why he didn’t just play Frank Costello and let someone else play Vito Genovese. “The Alto Knights” is not the worst gangster film, but its forgettable storytelling will have you sleeping with the fishes quickly.
