The Amateur: Rami Malek is excellent in the newest spy thriller

Based on the novel and the 1981 film of the same name, the newest spy thriller from director James Hawes may be a standard-by-the-number revenge film, but its nail-biting tension and lead protagonist manage to put you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. Despite not having a ton of action sequences, the protagonist’s motivation to avenge the death of his wife through his brain, as opposed to his strength, was an exciting way to show that his most potent weapon is his intelligence. In his first leading role since his Oscar-winning performance in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Rami Malek delivers an excellent performance as a CIA agent who vows to seek revenge on the terrorist who killed his wife. The supporting cast of Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, and Laurence Fishburne all deliver outstanding performances in the film. “The Amateur” may not be the best of the year, but thanks to an excellent lead performance by Rami Malek, “The Amateur” is a decent film that will entertain you for two hours.
